Revive Kamaraj rule in state: Sonia's clarion call to party

Karaikudi, Tamil Nadu, Apr 5: AICC President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi today called upon Congress partymen to be united and work hard for reviving Kamaraj rule in Tamil Nadu. Addressing a farmers rally, organised by the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee here, Ms Gandhi said ''if you are united and work hard, spread the party's deep roots among the people, identify yourself with them, their problems and difficulties, then the people will entrust their future and destiny with the Congress party.'' It was the duty of the present generation of Congressmen to work hard for reviving the Kamaraj rule, she said amid thunderous applause from party workers.

Stating that Tamil Nadu was the most progressive state in the country, and the people of the state were hardworking and enterprising, she said the people still take pride in the 'golden period' of Kamaraj rule. The former Congress stalwart had worked closely with Nehru and Indira Gandhi. The state had made remarkable progress during the long years of Congress rule. Many colleges, schools, dams, industries and the mid-day meal scheme still stand testimony to the vision of Kamaraj.

''That vision should be revived. It is our duty to work hard for realising the vision of Kamaraj'', she said.

She also offered to visit Tamil Nadu frequently if the partymen organised meetings of this type by remaining united and work with the people. ''I will spend as much time as I can here '' she assured.

Ms Gandhi recalled her tour to Tamil Nadu during late 80s with her husband Rajiv Gandhi and said she experienced the special affection the people had shown to their family members.
