Bangalore, Apr 5: Former Karnataka Chief Minister and senior Congress leader S M Krishna today welcomed Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunananidhi's decision to defer the implementation of controversial Hogenakal project and urged the agitators in Karnataka to end their stir.
Speaking to newspersons here he said the statement made by the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister reflected his statesmanship and it was welcome that the he had decided to deferred the implementation of the project until a popular government was established in Karnataka. This decision would no doubt improve the cordial relation enjoyed between the two states, he hoped.
"I spoke to Mr Karunanidhi and appreciated his stand. My effort was to see that the project was kept on hold till a popular government was elected in Karnataka," he remarked.
Mr Krishna said the insistence on part of the Tamil Nadu threat government to implement the project had created restlessness in Karnataka. Issues which had direct implications on inter state relations would have to be settled amicably, he said.
Answering a question he said he had brought this issue to the notice of the party supremo Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and communicated the concern of the people of Karnataka.
"I do not know what transpired between and New Delhi and Chennai.
I was only interested in end result of assuaging the ruffled feelings of people of both the states," he said when asked whether Congress had brought pressure on Mr Karunanidhi to put the project on hold.
He urged pro-Kannada organisations to end their agitation following the stand taken by Tamil Nadu.
He took exception to remarks made Tamil Super Star Rajanikant and said there was no need for such 'violent' remarks.
"He would have to do some introspection on his statement made yesterday," he said.
Mr Krishna also took a dig at Bharatiya Janata Party leaders in Karnataka and said strong reactions on the issue would not benefit the people. Such remarks were made out of selfish motive, he felt.
