Jagjivan Ram Jayanthi celebrations marred by clashes

Hyderabad, Apr 5 (UNI) Tense situation prevailed near the busy Basheerbagh flyover when Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) activists raised slogans against the Congress Government when a host of Congress leaders, including Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, were paying floral tributes to former Deputy Prime Minister Babu Jagjivan Ram.

The Congress leaders, including Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President D Srinivas and All India Congress Committee (AICC) Secretary Iqbal Singh, garlanded the statue of Babu Jagjivan Ram before the Nizam college, even as TRS activists raised slogans against Dr Reddy and the Congress Government.

Congress activists countered the TRS activists by shouting pro-Chief Minister slogans.

Later, when Telugu Desam Party (TTP) President N Chandrababu Naidu offered floral tributes to the former Deputy Prime Minister, TRS activists again staged a noisy protest, demanding that the main opposition party spell out its stand on the statehood for Telangana.

Police removed the activists from the scene and restored order.
