Bangalore, Apr 5 (UNI) As part of its efforts to propagate employee volunteering to social causes in India, Intel India today said 80 per cent of its employees have worked over 18,000 hours in schools across Delhi, Mumbai and in the city, during the just ended fiscal.

Under the community initiative, Intel employees had conducted workshops to improve the learning processes through various methods including teaching basic computer skills, support teachers for subjects such as Science, Mathematics, History and Geography.

''The company intends to develop inclusive and economically empowered communities through the expertise and interest of its employees. Through the programmes we will help communities in key areas like technology inclusion, education, environment stewardship and safety and community development,'' Intel India President Praveen Vishakantaiah said.

To encourage its employees' efforts, the company had contributed a matching grant of Rs 29 lakh to the 26 schools under 'Matching Grant Programme'.

Karnataka Governor Rameshwar Thakur presented the cheques to the schools on behalf of Intel India at a function held at Rajbhavan today.

Intel Director for South Asia and India, Rahul Bedi said the company, in association with some NGOs, would soon launch a social entrepreneurship programme in rural India to promote social system using technology, as part of the 40th anniversary of Intel worldwide and the 20th anniversary of Intel India.

''This programme is to empower the people in rural areas by helping them with self sustainable ecomomic development,'' he said.
