New Delhi, Apr 3: Senior Congress leaders Union Minister of State for Planning M V Rajasekharan and B Janardhana Poojari have objected to Tamil Nadu's attempt to build a drinking water project in Hogenakkal on the disputed Cauvery river.
In separate letters to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Minister for Union Water Resources Minister Saifuddin Soz, the two leaders have asked them to direct TN Government to make available a copy of the Detailed Project Report of the project to ensure that their project is not located in the disputed territory.
Mr Rajasekharan said any proposal to go ahead with the scheme on Cauvery river cannot be considered without inter-state implications. TN had not disclosed the details of the project before the Cauvery Water Dispute Tribunal, he said.
The Hogenakkal water project, he said, was on the common reaches of the river and the two states have a dispute over the ownership of islands since 2005. The issue is yet to be resolved by the CWDT and the Supreme Court.
''Hence, we request you to advice TN to desist from going ahead with Hogenakkal scheme till the dispute is resolved finally,'' the leaders wrote.
Mr Poojari said the Cauvery issue was pending before the Supreme Court and the status of the dispute was 'unsettled' but TN was seeking to go ahead with the project with assistance from Bank of Japan.
Karnataka, he said, had been protesting against the project since October 2006 but TN was brazenly going ahead with the project stoking angry agitations in Karnataka. The issue being sensitive was taking a violent turn in both states and assuming a huge law and order problem. The PM should personally intervene and stop the project and bring the two states to the negotiating table.
Mr Poojari has also written a letter to Congress President Sonia Gandhi.
