Tibet an integral part of China: Bardhan

Hyderabad, Mar 28: Toeing the lines of the Indian government vis-a-vis the Tibet issue, Communist Party of India (CPI) General secretary A B Bardhan today said Tibet was an integral part of China.

''We consider Tibet as a part of China. The issue is an internal affair of the Communist country. The Indian government has also recognised the Tibet issue as an internal affair of China,'' he said, addressing a meet-the-press programme, organised by the Andhra Pradesh Journalists Union here. Stating that spiritual leader Dalai Lama, who is in exile in India, was using the country as a platform to hold dialogue with the US authorities on Tibet issue, he said China could only decide the fate of Tibet.

Referring to the formation of a third alternative, the CPI leader said there was a need to unite all Left parties by preparing state-specific adjustments with like-minded parties to form the third alternative. The state-specific programmes would strengthen the Third Alternative in states where regional parties like the RJD, SP and DMK were strong, he added.

Mr Bardhan said the Left did not have any dialogue with the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in the meeting between TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu and the CPI on March 26 at the TDP leader's house. The discussion centered on the political situation in the country. Reiterating that the CPI would support statehood to Telangana, he said the party would support a Bill for Telangana if it was introduced by the UPA in Parliament.

''Our party has already given a letter to the UPA Sub-Committee on Telangana, headed by External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, and the UPA should evolve a consensus on the issue as it was included in its Common Minimum Programme (CMP),'' Mr Bardhan said.

The Andhra Pradesh government's consent was also needed for the formation of Telangana with the adoption of a resolution in the state Assembly, before introducing a Bill in Parliament, he said.

However, the CPI was against the formation of Bundelkhand state carved out of Uttar Pradesh as it was not viable, he added.
