Indira Gandhi Peace Prize for Gates Foundation

New Delhi, Mar 14: The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has been selected for the Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development for 2007. The International Jury for the Indira Gandhi Prize announced the name of Gates Foundation for the award today, a release of the Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust said here.

The award ceremony will take place in the first week of November, 2008 in New Delhi. Microsoft chairman Bill Gates and his wife Melinda created the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in 2001 to help reduce inequities in the United States and around the world. Headquartered in Seattle, the foundation is led by co-chairs Bill Gates, Melinda Gates and William H Gates Sr.

The foundation works to help people lead healthy, productive lives. In developing countries, it focuses on improving people's health and giving them the chance to lift themselves out of hunger and extreme poverty.

The foundation had been active in India for several years.

1984 rioters are paid for killing Sikhs: Book
