Lanka Army Chief to embark on 6-day visit to India

New Delhi, Mar 2: Sri Lankan Army Chief Lieutenant General Sarath Fonseka will arrive here today on a six-day visit to strengthen military ties between the two countries.

Lt General Fonseka will briefly interact with officials of the Indian Army on Tuesday, said Defence Ministry sources. He will lay a wreath at the memorial to the Unknown Soldier at India Gate and would then receive a guard of honour at the Defence Ministry's headquarters at South Block. Defence Ministry officials said that India would like to ensure that the Lankan Army keeps an edge over the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) simultaneously the Sri Lanka Government also come out with a devolution package that is acceptable to the minorities in that country. Fonseka, who is accompanied by Sri Lankan Defence Secretary Gothabaya Rajapaksa, has pledged to defeat the LTTE at the earliest. The Lankan Army is presently engaged in intense battles against the LTTE in the northern part of that country.

The Sri Lankan Government expects help from the international community to contain the rebel group.

TELSCC to collect food, medicine for Tamils in SL

Chennai, Dec 12: Tamil Eelam Liberation Supporters Coordination Committee (TELSCC) will launch a fortnight long movement in the state from December 15 to collect food, medicines and other essential commodities to the starving Tamils in Lanka.TELSCC Convenor P Nedumaran, a staunch supporter of Tamil Eelam, yesterday said here that the collected materials would be despatched to the suffering Tamils through the International Red Cross Society.In a statement here, Mr Nedumaran said the TELSCC also condemned the Lankan government.....
