India dream to increase steel production by 2020

Jamshedpur, Feb 27: With Indian policy makers setting a target to expand steel production to 200 million tonnes by 2020, a three-day international conference today began here promising to take step forward in ths regard.

The conference-cum-exhibition jointly organised by Tata Steel and Indo-German Chamber of Commerce with a unique concept 'Steelrise-2008' stressed on inclusive growth comprising technmology, Corporate Social Responsibilty (CSR) and education. In his welcome note, Tata Steel Chief Operating Officer(COO) H M Nerurkar, while reiterating the his company's determination to put best foot forward towards the goal and also talked on 'sustainalbility of growth'.

He admitted that emphasis was not being given to this sector to make it look attractive among the young generations. Mr Nerurkar said the pace of work in this domain did not match the present youth's expectation and hoped that institutions would take care to make intresting curriculum to catch up with dream of the young generation in terms choice of their profession.

The COO hoped that the conference would focus on another core issue on CSR like displacement and resettlement.

Consul General of German Guenter Wehrmann said the economic tie between his country and India was ''always strong and expanding'' particularly in iron and steel sectors.

Mr Wehrmann said the volume of Indo-German trade might be invisible to common men but since long both the countries had been enojoying excellent relations.

He said last year Germany made export to engineering industry in the country to the tune of 2.6 billion Euros, a leap of almost 25 per cent.

During the three-day meet, presentation would be made by global players like POSCO, Siemens, VAI and Tata Bluescope among others.

Besides, Tata Stel, Usha Martin and Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd would also make presentations on their expansion plans during the conclave.

Jharkhand: Polling begins peacefully for by-election

Jamshedpur, Aug 29: Amidst tight security arrangements and boycott threat by Maoists, polling in 1,263 booths for by-election in Jamsedpur Loksabha constituency began peacefully this morning. Reports from the Election Control Room here said the polling began at 0700 hours in slow pace and about 10 to 15 per cent voting was reported in the first half. Reports from naxalite-affected Ghatshila Assembly constituency said about 10 per cent voters exercised their franchise while in Baharagora Assembly constituency adjacent to the Orissa border,.....
