Boat hits rock: Five fishermen escape

Puducherry, Feb 26: Five fishermen had a miraculous escape when their boat hit a rock at an estuary near Thengaithittu post in the wee hours of today.

Police said the fishermen, who jumped into the water, swam to safety. Later, the boat was towed to the port. Meanwhile, Mechanised Boat Owners Association President Mahalingam told newspersons that the mishap occurred due to shallowness of the estuary.

He alleged that no proper dredging was carried out.

Nagpur, Nov 18: Four persons, including a woman and two children, drowned in a village tank in Maharashtra's Bhandara district today. According to the police, the four persons, identified as Shalini Bhanarkar (26), Akash Bhanarkar (4), Rani Bhanarkar (1) and Vilas Dighore (30), drowned in the tank in village Bhawal, about 40 kilometres from Bhandara, this evening. Road accidents rise, toll less in MP

Bhopal, Jan 10: The government has claimed that though road accidents marked a 10 per cent rise annually due to increase in number of vehicles, the death toll in Madhya Pradesh marked a decline due to a massive campaign to adopt safety measures. Death of pedestrians in road accidents also declined by 8.7 per cent in 2006 as compared to the previous year, official sources said today. As many as 5327 people were killed in road accidents in Madhya Pradesh in 2005.....
