Sharif, Zardari to discuss govt formation on Feb 21

Islamabad, Feb 21: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif will meet Pakistan People's Party (PPP) co-chairperson Asif Ali Zardari here today to discuss the formation of a new government.

According to sources, Zardari continued consultations with his party leaders on Wednesday and also met US officials. Sources also said that the US is working on a formula under which the PPP would form a government with a coalition of smaller parties such as the six-party religious alliance, Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA), the Muttehida Qaumi Movement MQM), a Pashtun sub-nationalist party, and the Awami National Party (ANP), as well as independents and moderate leaders rom tribal areas, Syed Saleem Shahzad wrote in the Asia Times Online.

The PPP of assassinated former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto has emerged as the largest party but will need to ally with ther parties to form a new government.

Musharraf rules out US strikes in Pakistan

Islamabad, July 27: Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf said today his forces were fully capable of dealing with al Qaeda militants and dismissed the possibility of US forces taking anti-terrorism action on Pakistani soil. Musharraf's remarks came after a spate of statements from US officials suggesting the US military kept open the option of a strike against Taliban and al Qaeda targets on Pakistani territory. ''It is very clear that here on Pakistani territory only.....
