Rodrigues for incorporation of moral values in curriculum.

Chandigarh, Feb 21 (UNI) Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Union Territory Administrator, General (Retd) S F Rodrigues, today called upon academicians and educationists to do a performance audit of academic endeavour, in order to incorporate moral values in curriculum.

''There is a need of instituting a responsive system for evaluating the progress of our social development, with the focus on education, to help the state in improving its plans and policies'', he said while delivering inaugural address at a seminar on ''Indian Ideas of Freedom'', here.

Expressing deep anguish over the widening gap between the rich and poor even after 60 years of independence, General Rodrigues said a complete analysis was required to identify the factors responsible for the situation and then to take bold initiatives to provide opportunities of equal participation to the disadvantaged sections, in the process of social change and the implementation of national policies.

He emphasized that the universities must come forward with innovative projects to ensure that the students from the poor strata get special attention for develop their potential and making them professionally competent.

Universities and higher education institutions have an important role to play in guiding the national endeavour for bringing about social transformation and equality in the society - the basic goals of our freedom struggle, he added.

Night temperatures increase in Northwest

New Delhi, Feb 21 (UNI) Night temperatures registered a sharp increase in the northwest region today, providing respite from a prolonged spell of cold. The mercury increased in Punjab with Adampur, near Jalandhar, recording the minimum temperature at 7.6 degrees as against yesterday's 5.2 degrees, followed by Amritsar recording 8.0 Ludhiana 8.1 and Patiala 9.5 degrees. Child labourers agitate to stop exploitation by NGOs

New Delhi, Feb 21 (UNI) Scores of child labourers working in different areas of Delhi today staged a demonstration at the Jantar Mantar here, demanding that the Government must act immediately to stop their exploitation. Hike in bus fares inevitable, says Dhumal

Dharamshala, Feb 21 (UNI) Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister P K Dhumal today blamed the UPA Government for increasing the cost of diesel by Re one per litre recently which had resulted in hike in passenger fares in HRTC buses, as the cost of diesel and spare parts has gone up manifold.
