Orsenna predicts global crisis of drinking water

Kolkata, Feb 21: Economist and writer Erik Orsenna has predicted worldwide scarcity of drinking water in the next few decades and suggested long-term planning to conserve the sources for effectaive distribution of potable water.

Mr Orsenna, also member of the Academie Francaise, delivering a lecture on ''Water Supply&Allied Aspects'' at Indian Chamber of Commerce yesterday described the scarcity of water as a''Global Problem'' causing regional tension among the bordering nations. He said water was the key problem in peace negotiation between Israel and Palestine. He also said China had proposed to build a dam in the upper Bramhaputra in its territory to ease water scarcity for them but the result could be adverse for neighbouring India and Bangladesh.

On Kolkata, Mr Orsenna suggested imposing of tax for using water saying the money generated from cess could be used for proper distribution of safe drinking water.

He said this measure should be taken up for future management or else the city would also face a huge scarcity of water as population as well as the city was growing on a large scale.

CIB committee to submit report on ragging to SC

Chennai, Feb 22: The seven-member expert committee, headed by former Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Chief P K Raghavan to find out the means and methods to prevent ragging in college campuses, will submit its report before the Supreme Court in the first week of April.Talking to reporters, after a meeting with parents, students and college management representatives here today, Mr Raghavan said the Committee had visited Guwahati, Kolkata, Delhi, Jaipur, Mumbai, Bhopal and Kochi, where they received some constructive suggestions.....
