Nepalese EC extends date to submit list of candidates

Kathmandu, Feb 21 (UNI) At the request of the Nepalese government, the Election Commission (EC) today extended the date to submit the list of candidates by four days to accommodate the agitating Madhesi parties in the forthcoming election.

The EC has fixed February 24 as the new deadline for political parties to submit the closed list candidates for the election to be held on April 10.

The deadline was extended in view of the demands of the Madhesi political parties that include the autonomy of Terai bordering India.

Discussion between the Madhesi parties and the government are going on and they have said that an agreement is very close.

Nepal is holding the election of Constituent Assembly for the first time that will write a new constitution and decide the fate of the monarchy which has ruled over 240 years almost in a dictatorial way.

Parliament has endorsed a proposal to declare Nepal a republic, abolishing monarchy, that will be implemented after the election.

Major political parties have already declared that they would go for republican system in the coming election, saying that ''the monarchy has time and again deceived peoples' rights and hindered the development process.'' UNI XC SKB AS2014

One dead, eight injured in clashes over water

Kolhapur, Feb 21 (UNI) One person was killed and eight others injured in clashes between two groups over an irrigation pipe-line water scheme at Arale village in Karvir Tehsil of the district today. The two groups, one led by Bharat Bhausaheb Patil and the other by Shahaji Hindurao Patil had a dispute over the pipe-line water scheme for the past few years, police said. BJP holds rally seeking tabling of women reservation bill in Parliament

New Delhi, Feb 21 : With its eye firmly on the women vote bank, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) held a massive women's rally here on Thursday seeking the tabling of a bill seeking 33 per cent reservation for women in Indian Parliament during the budget session. Activists accuse Modi of Human Rights violations

Ahmedabad, Feb 21 (UNI) People's Union For Civil Liberties (PUCL), a Human Rights group, today charged Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's government with violations of Human Rights of tribals in the State. PUCL demanded a judicial inquiry, by a High Court Judge into the police firing on tribals in Atarsumba village of Vijaynagar, which resulted in two death and injury to three people.
