CPI(M) levelling baseless allegations against me: Valsaraj

Puducherry, Feb 21: Stating that there were no irregularities in the land deal for Mahe Cooperative Institute of Information Technology, Puducherry Health Minister E Valsaraj today charged the CPI(M) with levelling baseless allegations against him for political advantage.

Addressing a press conference here, Mr Valsaraj said he had formed several cooperative societies in Mahe, including the society for the BEd college three years back with the permission of National Council of Trade Education, New Delhi.

A committee, formed to identify a suitable site for constructing the college, purchased two acre at Palloor for Rs 1.5 crore five months back, he said.

Mr Valsaraj said in Mahe one cent of land costs about Rs one to five lakh and six documents were registered in connection with the land deal.

The government did not provide a single paise to the society, he said adding that all money transactions were done through cheques and the cooperative department had granted permission for one Vikas Cooperative Society to purchase land adjoining to the land purchased by his society at a rate of Rs 68,000 per cent (435.6 Sq-ft).

Stating that all the transactions for the land purchase were handled by the Vice-President of the Society, he alleged that the CPI(M), which was in power in adjoining Kerala state, had foisted charges to tarnish his image.

Meanwhile, CPI National Council Member R Viswanathan demanded that Mr Valsraj should resign and face the inquiry.

With the court, ordering a vigilance inquiry against him, he had lost his right to continue as a minister, Mr Viswanathan alleged.
