Congress stages walkout on issue of contaminated water deaths

Jaipur, Feb 21 (UNI) The Opposition Congress today staged a walkout from the Rajasthan Assembly in protest against the state government's attitude over the issue of reported deaths due to drinking contaminated water in the capital town.

The issue was raised by Brijkishore Sharma(Congress) during the Zero Hour in the house and later several of his party colleagues including Leader of the Opposition Hemaram Chaudhary, Harimohan Sharma and Mahir Azad joined in.

Mr Sharma said that 11 people had been died after consuming contaminated water in some localities in Jaipur during past couple of months but the state government had showed apathy over the issue.

The government even did not bother to conduct post mortem of the victims, he added.

His party colleague Harimohan Sharma said that the government was not at all serious in the matter, forcing the people to seek the court's intervention. Several other opposition members also joined in to express their unhappiness over the government's attitude and this led to noisy scenes for sometime.

PHED Minister Sanwar Lal Jat tried to pacify the opposition, saying that the water samaples' testing had showed that the deaths were not due to contaminated water but those were due to routine diseases.

His remarks that the opposition wanted to win the election over the issue, greatly annoyed the opposition, and Mr Azad said that the minister should not try to politicise the matter.

Mr Chaudhry also expressed his dissatisfction over the minister's reply and said that the government should ensure safe drinking water supply to the people. ''If the government was unable to supply safe drinking water, then it should at least stop supply of contaminated water,'' he noted.

He said that the opposition was dissatisfied with the government's reply and attitude over the issue and wanted to stage a walk out. Later all Congress members walked out.
