Bangla detained Ex-PM Hasina in hospital

Dhaka, Feb 21: Bangladesh's detained former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has been suffering from various health complications, has been shifted to hospital from a makeshift jail here today.

She was admitted to Square Hospital this morning amid tight security. Physician Abdullah said she was suffering from high blood pressure, allergy and hearing problems as her ears were damaged by the impact of grenade blasts at her rally in Dhaka on August 21, 2004. Earlier, her party Awami League demanded that the former Prime Minister be sent to the US for her ear treatment. Jail authorities, however, refused saying she could not be sent abroad under the jail code. She can be treated at any hospital of her choice, they said. Sheikh Hasina, aged 61, was arrested on July 16 last year in connection with an extortion case involving 3 crore Taka filed by a chief executive of a local power company as the present military-backed caretaker government launched war on corruption.

She, however, challenged the cases in the higher court. On February 6, the High Court in a judgment said she can not be tried under the present emergency power rules and quashed the proceedings of one corruption case for which she was arrested. The government appealed against the High Court judgment and the matter is pending before the Supreme Court.

She ruled the country as Prime Minister for five years from 1996.
