Activists accuse Modi of Human Rights violations

Ahmedabad, Feb 21 (UNI) People's Union For Civil Liberties (PUCL), a Human Rights group, today charged Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's government with violations of Human Rights of tribals in the State.

PUCL demanded a judicial inquiry, by a High Court Judge into the police firing on tribals in Atarsumba village of Vijaynagar, which resulted in two death and injury to three people.

According to PUCL President Prakash Shah, an investigation team has been sent to tribal areas and the group will come out with a full report soon. Mr Shah alleged that the state government did not seem to be sincere enough about doing justice to the tribals. An inquiry committee has been set-up to look into the matter but the committee does not have any member with a tribal background and understanding of their cultural issues.

Tribal land belongs to tribals and government should immediately hand over it to them. He demanded that minimum compensation of Rs 10 lakh should be given to the families of the tribals, who were killed in the police firing.

He also demanded withdrawal of false cases against six tribals who were arrested recently.
