Abhijit Kadam memorial soccer tourney from Feb 27

Pune, Feb 21 (UNI) For the first time, five professional Indian league teams will showcase their skills in the fifth edition of the All India Abijit Kadam Memorial Soccer Tournament which gets underway at the Bharati Vidyapeeth grounds here from February 27 to March 7.

Abhijit Kadam Memorial Foundation managing trustee Vishwajit Kadam, speaking to reporters here today, said the Reliance Industries-sponsored tournament will offer a whopping total prize money of Rs 1.71 lakh. The winners will receive Rs one lakh plus a trophy, while the runner-up will receive Rs 51,000 and a trophy.

Besides the winners and runner-up, there will be cash awards for the ''Best Player of the Tournament'' and the ''Best Goalkeeper'' who will be richer by Rs 10.000 each.

The five teams namely Mumbai Football Club (Elite Division champs), Osians New Delhi Heroes (Sr Div champs), Vasco Sports Club Goa, Indian Bank Chennai and Pune Football Club are among 32 teams who will be vying for honours in the championship which is being held under the aegis of the All India Football Federation (AIFF), the Western India Football Association (WIFA) and the Poona District Football Association (PDFA).

A total of 14 local teams along with 14 outstation teams will be matching their talents with the best in the fray, Mr Kadam said.

Mr Kadam, who is also the president of the PDFA and vice president of WIFA, said, ''We have tried our best to accommodate the local and district teams so that they get the competition exposure with the best.'' Bollywod superstar Shah Rukh Khan will formally inaugurate the championship on February 27, Mr Kadam said.
