30 farmers held for scuffle with police

Fatehpur, Feb 21: As many 30 farmers were today arrested for last night's firing on the district court premises here.

Several policemen were among over 24 people wounded in the firing between police and farmers at the district court.

According to Superintendent of Police K S Pippal, farmers' leader Narsingh Patel had been given permission for day's agitation at the district court.

However, he sat on an indefinite agitation and even refused to talk to district administration and district panchayat president.

When the police arrested Patel for violating the orders, his supporters opened fired at the police.

Sensing the situation going out of control, the police fired in the air and shot teargas shells to disperse the mob.

In the ensuing firing, several people, including police personnel, were wounded.

Meanwhile, the accused had been sent to jail and wounded were admitted to a hospital.

The Patel had been protesting the alleged ''step-motherly'' treatment of the Uttar Pradesh and Central governments towards farmers in Doaba of Fatehpur, which was facing a similar situation like drought-hit Bundelkhand.
