States not utilising Central funds: HRD Deputy Secretary

Hyderabad, Feb 19 (UNI) Deputy Secretary of Human Resource Development (HRD) of the Centre, Richa Sharma today said some State Governments are not utilising the funds allocated by the Centre for educating the mentally challenged people.

Inaugurating Rajiv Vidya Mission (Sarva Siksha Abhiyan, SSA), a national level workshop on 'increasing participation of children with special needs with inclusive education' here, she said the Government should take initiatve in providing education to all children by utilising the funds.

Stating that the Andhra Pradesh Government had occupied first place in utilising the Central funds, she said the Centre was committed to provide more such funds to the State.

MP seeks central assistance of Rs 1,548 cr

Bhopal, Feb 19 (UNI) The Madhya Pradesh government has sought central assistance of Rs 1,548.91 crore for drought relief. A memorandum in this regard was presented, at a meeting with state government officers here today, to a central team -- led by Joint Secretary (Agriculture) S L Patnayak -- that arrived here to assess the drought situation, an official release said. MLA's 'dharna' at police station turns violent, cops lob gas

Panaji, Feb 19 (UNI) The sit-in 'dharna' in front of the Panjim police station by Taleigao legislator and former Goa minister Atanasio (Babush) Monserrate and his followers turned violent tonight, with police resorting to lathicharge and bursting of teargas shells here. The North Goa district police Superintendent Neraj Kumar Thakur told UNI that police repulsed violence and brought the situation under control after the mob petted stones and attempting to storm the police station.
