New Delhi, Feb 19: The Supreme Court today pulled up social activist Teesta Setalvad and questioned her locus standi in Gujarat riots related cases.
A bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justices R V Ravindran and Dalveer Bhandari asked the counsel for the accused whether she was their spokesperson. The counsel appearing for the petitioners immediately disowned her and said that whatever she was doing, was on her own and they had nothing to do with her. The apex court is hearing the petitions of nine people seeking direction to the Gujarat government to drop POTA charges as per the recommendations of POTA Review Committee appointed by the Centre.
Senior counsel Harish Salve, appearing for the petitioners contended before the court that since POTA is a Central legislation, the Centre was competent enough to appoint a review committee and recommend the withdrawal of POTA charges against whom there was no prima facie evidence to show that they have been involved in terrorist activities.
Ms Setalvad has been accusing the Supreme Court of deliberately delaying the hearing of these petitions.
The Gujarat government has not been willing to implement the recommendations of the POTA Review Committee.
