No compensation for families of farmers committing suicide: Minister

Bhubaneswar, Feb 19 (UNI) The Orissa government has no provision to pay compensation to the families of farmers committing suicide, State Agricutlure Minister Surendranath Naik told the State Assembly today.

Responding to a question put forward jointly by Taraprasad Bahinipati and Sitakanta Mohapatra (both Congress) the minister said six farmers have committed suicide in the state during the last eight years.

The Minister further said that inquiry conducted into the suicides revealed that the suicides were not related either to agriculture or to burden on farmers due to the agricultural loan taken by them.

Of the six suicides, while two farmers committed suicide in Baragarha district, Bolangir, Rayagada and Jajpur reported one suicide each.
