NCP to emerge as an alternative in Orissa politics:Pawar

Bhubaneswar, Feb 19 (UNI) Nationalist Congress Party(NCP) president Sharad Pawar today said his party will soon emerge as an alternative to the BJD-BJP combine and the Congress in Orissa as they have failed to solve the problems of the state.

Addressing the first rally of the Orissa unit of the NCP called ''Parivartan Samavesh,'' Mr Pawar said a change was necessary for Orissa which has become the poorest state of the country during the last eight years of the rule of BJD-BJP government.

The Opposition Congress, he said, had also miserably failed to rise to the occasion and protect the interests of the people adding that the NCP which had always stood behind the farmers, adivasis and the dalits should be given a chance to serve the state in the next election.

The Union Minister came down heavily on the Naveen Patnaik government for not giving any attention to the problems of the farmers, adivasis and the rising unemployment in the state.

''I fail to understand why the BJD-BJP government has not been able to take up the plight of the farmers with the Centre though we have come out with several schemes and programmes for them,'' he remarked.

Mr Pawar said he was shocked to learn that the farmers were facing innumerable problems yet there was no representation from the state before the Centre to solve them.

''Orissa is the only state which had never sought for any assistance to tackle the problems of the farmers.'' Referring to the naxalite problem in the state, the NCP president said gun was not the answer, adding that unless poverty was removed, unemployment problem addressed and the condition of the farmers improved, naxal issue was bound to remain.

Among others, NCP General Secretary D P Tripathy, Tariq Anwar, A Rizvi, state NCP leaders- Ashok Das,Amar Prasad Satpathy and Prashant Nanda addressed the rally saying that the party would soon emerge as a force and an alternative to the corrupt and incapable BJD-BJP government and inefficient Opposition Congress.

NCP state coordinator Bijaya Mohapatra presided over the meeting and called upon the people to dislodge the Naveen Patnaik government.
