NCP lodges complaint about violation of election code

Agartala, Feb 19: The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has lodged a complaint of violation of election code against the Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) and four of its members, who had filed nominations for the Assembly elections on February 23, with the Election Commission of India (ECI).

NCP state president Nirmalya Dasgupta alleged that the TPCC had claimed that four NCP candidates were supporting the Congress and had joined the party on February 16 even though the last date for withdrawal of nominations was February nine.

He stated that the candidates had announced to withdraw their candidature unilaterally without consulting the party high command and without following the legal norms.

He also accused the TPCC leaders of ''playing tricks in an unhealthy manner and caused serious damage to the NCP's image.'' Mr Das sought the ECI's action against the Congress, alleging that it was involved in a serious breach of election code as per the provisions of the Representation of People's Act, 1951.
