Karnataka sets March 2008 for total sanitation in the State

Mangalore, Feb 19 (UNI) The Karnataka government had set March 2008 as the target to provide toilets in all schools and Anganwadis in the state under 'Total Sanitation Programme', Karnataka Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (KRWSSA) Commissioner S D Meena said today.

Addressing a press conference at the end of a two-day state level workshop on 'Total Sanitation' Campaign here, he said that of the target of 36,000 school toilets, 30,000 have been completed and of the total 24,000 Anganwadi toilet, 19,000 have been completed.

He said that as against target of 53.29 lakh toilet in the state, 13.05 lakh had completed with the modest achievement of 24.37 per cent. The centre had set the target of achieving 100 per cent achievement by 2012. In the two-day Workshop, it had been decided to intensify the sanitation coverage during 2008 which had been declared as the International Year of Sanitation, he added.

Mr Meena said that during 2007, 121 Gram Panchayats in the state have been nominated for central government sponsored Nirmal Gram Puraskar (NGP) awards and proposal for 581 Gram Panchayats have been sent to the centre for the awards.
