HC seeks clarification from CEC for laxity in voters' list

Lucknow, Feb 19 (UNI) Hearing a Public Interest Litigation(PIL) against the missing names of around 80 lakh people from the voters' list in the past Uttar Pradesh Assembly poll, the Lucknow Bench of Allahabad High Court today sought clarification from the Central Election Commission and other opposition parties within three weeks.

The Bench, comprising UP Chief Justice Hemant Laxman Gokhale and Justice Sanjay Mishra, passed the order on the PIL filed by senior Supreme Court advocate and Congress leader Salman Khurshid and leader of Congress in the state Legislative Assembly Pramod Tiwari.

The petition said voting was a constitutional right and no person country be deprived of it.

As many as 80 lakh people could not exercise their right to franchise as their names were missing from the voters' list, the petition added.

The petitioner was also deprived of his right to vote.

March 11 has been fixed as the next date of hearing in the case.
