Former minister Basavarajeshwari passes away

Bellary (Karnataka), Feb 19: Former Union Minister Basavarajeshwari died here today after a prolonged illness. She was 86. She is survived by four sons and four daughters.

Basavarajeshwari, belonging to Lingayat community, began her political career with the Congress and served the party for over four decades. She became the Union Minister of State for Woman and Child Welfare under Prime Minister P V Narasimha Rao during 1993-96.

After quitting the Congress, she joined the BJP in 2004.

Elected to Lok Sabha thrice from Bellary, she was also a member of Karnataka Legislative Assembly for three times and represented Legislative Council once.

She had also served as Deputy Speaker of the Karnataka Assembly.

The last rites would take place at her native village Gejjalaghatta in Raichur district tomorrow, family sources said.

MPs plan collective action against 'unfair' rail budget

New Delhi, Feb 27: Cutting across party lines, Members of Parliament from Karnataka today expressed disappointment about their state ''being let down badly'' in Railway Budget 2008-09.
