Nagpur, Feb 19 (UNI) A Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) was among the five people arrested in connection with a cheating case here.
According to police, the DySP identified as Subhash Madavi, was arrested last night for his alleged involvement with a group of tricksters, pretending to sell gold at cheap rates. The other four people arrested were identified as Dilip Mankar, Madhukar Mathori (both residents of Bhandara), Aniruddha Mahatma and Hamid Qureshi (residents of Nagpur), the police said.
They struck a deal with Animesh Ashok Banarasi, a jeweller from Chhindwara in neighbouring Madhya Pradesh, for 2 kilograms of gold for Rs 15 lakh at a rate of Rs 7,500 per 10 grams which is much lower than the prevailing market rate, the police said.
As planned, Mr Banarasi met the four near a restaurant here last week to give them the money and get the gold. However, just when the exchange was taking place, Madavi arrived there in a police vehicle and allegedly snatched the cash as well as the gold on the pretext of 'seizing' them. He then allegedly dropped Mr Banarasi and the four tricksters at a secluded spot in his vehicle and left.
Mr Banarasi lodged a complaint with the police, after his enquiries revealed that the seizure had not been recorded. The police nabbed Madavi and the other four late last night and seized part of the cash and the gold.
