Women clinch first two golds on day 1

Lucknow, Feb 18 (UNI) On the opening day of the sixth Uttar Pradesh State games, women players dominated the proceedings by clinching both the gold medals today.

The first gold was won by wrestler Jayawanti of Gautambuddha Nagar (GB) in 72 Kg category.

The final encounter of the 63 Kg category will be held between Rita (Meerut) and Anita Sharma of GB Nagar, while Anshu Tomar of Meerut will take on Sonali of Varanasi in the final of the 67 Kg category.

In the boys category of the same event, Mayank (Muzaffarnagar), Jagdeep (Lucknow), Ramashankar (Azamgarh) Pramod Kumar (UP Police) and Raj Kumar (Gorakhpur Hostel) won their respective encounters in the 74 Kg category.

The second gold of the day also went to women, when Rekha Rawat of Mordabad beat Kirti Sharma of Kanpur in the 48 Kg category of 48 Kg boxing event.

In girls Kabbadi, Ghazipur beat Lucknow 41-14 and Allahabad beat Sitapur at 52-11.

Earlier in the day, UP Olympic Association president and Steel Minister, Government of India Akhilesh Das inaugurated the games.

In his address, the minister announced a reward of Rs 2,000 and trophy to each winner.

About 3,600 participants and 500 officials are taking part in this seven-day extravaganza.

Ban sought on 'Jodha Akbar'

Chandigarh, Feb 18 (UNI) Akhil Bharatiya Rajput Adhivakta Sangh today filed a case in a local court, seeking ban on the screening of Hrithik-Aishwarya starrer 'Jodha Akbar', alleging it distorted the facts of the history. The case was filed by Sangh Chairperson Arvind Thakur in the court of Civil Judge Senior Division here. The hearing in the case has been fixed for tomorrow. Suspected Bangladeshi illegal migrants belong to India, Nepal

Hyderabad, Feb 18 (UNI) Nine suspected Bangladeshi illegal migrants picked up yesterday from Gorakhpur-Bangalore train at Secunderabad railway station by the city Task Force police turned out to be from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Nepal. Police Commissioner B Prasad Rao said that during the interrogation, it was revealed that out of the nine arrested, eight were Indian citizens hailing from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar and the ninth person was belonged to Nepal, who has been.....

Injured tiger serious in MP

Bhopal, Feb 18 (UNI) The condition of an aged tiger, who was brought in a special vehicle this morning to the Van Vihar National Park here for treatment after being found severely injured in Satna district's Uchehra forest area on Saturday, is serious. ''Veterinarians attending on the carnivore say that the next 48 to 72 hours will be crucial. Prime facie a bullet injury to the back was suspected but today's surgery did not lead.....
