Kashmir savours dried vegetables during winter

Kashmir, Feb 18, 2008 : During the icy cold season when the Kashmir valley is completely snowed down and the main highways are blocked and trucks ferrying essential commodities are stranded en route, locals are not starved for vegetables as they have a good stock of dried green staple.

The indigenous art of drying and preserving vegetables Hokshun is still prevalent in the valley. Dried bottle gourds, tomatoes, brinjals, spinach and turnip with leaves can be easily found in the markets here.

India, Pak foreign secretaries begin 2-day talks

Islamabad, Mar 13: Top Indian and Pakistani diplomats began two-day talks in Islamabad today focusing on key issues of Kashmir, peace and security and terrorism. Foreign secretary Shiv Shankar Menon and his Pakistani counterpart Riaz Muhammad Khan are leading their respective delegations at the meeting, which will also look into the issues of visa liberalisation and ways to promote strategic restraint regime in nuclear and conventional fields. Institute to study seismic activity in NE: Govt
