Sugarcane growers stage dharna

Mandya, Karnataka, Feb 18(UNI) Sugarcane growers of this district launched an indefinite dharna demanding immediate fixing of fresh price for the produce.

The dharna was led by Marilingaiah of Rajya Raitha Sangha to protest the delay in taking action in protecting the interests of the distressed farmers.

Several pro-farmers organisations have already given a call to launch a jail bharo agitation if the government failed to fulfil their demands immediately.

SC issues notices to CBI on petition challenging HC order

New Delhi, Feb 18 (UNI) The Supreme Court today issued notices to the CBI on a petition filed by the Punjab Government challenging a Punjab and Haryana High Court order for a CBI inquiry in the Moga Sex Scandal. A bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justice R V Raveendran, however, refused to take on record the status report CBI wanted to file. Govt officials dismissed from service

Hyderabad, Feb 18: Former Deputy Executive Engineer (R and B) in Ananthapur district S Vijaya Bharat was dismissed from service after being convicted by Additional Special Judge for SPE and ACB cases, Hyderabad today. Earlier, Mr Bharat was trapped by ACB officials on September 20, 2002, while accepting a bribe of Rs 25,000 for doing an official favour, a press release said here.
