Kutch's Rann Utsav to commence from Feb 20

Ahmedabad, Feb 18 (UNI) A three-day long 'Rann Utsav-2008', aimed at promoting economic activities through tourism in arid regions, will be held at Dhordo village in Kutch district from February 20, Gujarat Tourism Minister Jaynarayan Vyas said here today.

Talking to mediapersons, Mr Vyas said, ''All the 400 tents made for accommodation have been fully booked with people coming from all over the world to experience life in its natural eco-friendly environment.

''The Utsav is not only a journey about the progress of Kutch, but also an event to witness and be a part of the vibrant cultural life and the rich heritage of Kutch,'' he added.

Mr Vyas said the Utsav has attracted people from all walks of life from tourists to businessmen to dignitaries. Even ambassadors of 10 foreign countries, including the US, Japan, Korea and Sri Lanka, have confirmed their participation.

Of the 400 tents, around 100 are booked by foreigners, over another 100 by tourists from other parts of India, and the remaining are booked by Gujaratis, including several corporate bodies, he said.

The Rann of Kutch has many attractions for tourists like the flat land of mud to ecological attraction of flamingoes to the beautifully-crafted handicrafts.

The border district is the second largest district in the country after Leh and its Rann is a home to the wild donkeys.
