HC upholds 7-yr punishment to accused in Imam Ali case

Maduai, Feb 19 (UNI) The Madurai Bench of Madras High Court today upheld the seven years imprisonment awarded to seven prime accused in the sensational escape case of Islamic extremists Imam Ali and Hyder Ali at Tirumangalam in Madurai district in March, 2002.

Justice A Selvam upheld the Trial Court's conviction and sentence given to Jagubar Sadiq Ali, Fakrudeen alias Police Fakrudeen, Fiazedeen alias Fiaz, Syed Ali, Abdul Nainar, Shahul Hameed and Shajahan.

Confirming the sentence for the seven persons for armed rioting, criminal conspiracy and causing injury to the public servant, the judge directed the Trial court to incarcerate them in prison for serving the remaining period.

He also confirmed the conviction and sentence of five years of imprisonment given to 12 others, including Syed Ibrahim, Sulaiman, Ibrahim Gani and Babu for illegal assembly, armed rioting and criminal conspiracy and dismissed their appeal.

However, the Judge partly allowed the appeal of 18 others, who had already undergone five years of imprisonment and released from the jail, when they wanted the sentence to be reduced on paper.

The judge acquitted them of punishment for criminal conspiracy, unlawful assembly, guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object and reduced their sentence by two years.

Truck owners to go for state-wide stir against speed governor

Pregnant tigress rescued in Bengal

Kolkata, Feb 18 (UNI) Ending high drama, West Bengal Forest officials today rescued a pregnant tigress, which had climbed a tree after straying into a village at Deulbari in South Twentyfour Parganas district in the Sunderbans area. Four villagers received minor injuries when they helped Forest department officials catch the animal. One of them was taken to hospital.
