Woman injured in political clash in Tripura

Agartala, Feb 15 (UNI) A woman was injured in a clash between Congress and CPI(M) workers in Kailashahar in north Tripura when Congress workers tried to stop disbursement of old age pension from a local bank yesterday.

Police said a group of Congress supporters, led by MLA and candidate of the area, Birajit Sinha, assaulted one Anjan Roy, a CPI (M) supporter who was assisting widows to fill up withdrawal forms.

Congress men, also allegedly looted Rs 5000 from the victims.

Mr Sinha had reportedly rushed there and protested against disbursement of the fund and asked the bank manager to stop the process as the 'model code of the conduct' had come into force for the February 23 Assembly polls.

However, Mr Sinha told UNI over phone that CPI(M) men present there argued that the people were drawing the pending amounts. After a heated exchange of words workers of both parties attacked each other following which a woman sustained mild injuries.

He alleged that the administration issued new pension violating the model code of conduct and the matter had been brought to the notice of the District Magistrate.

CPI(M) leaders maintained that these were pending pension for the month of November 2007. They also charged Congress workers with harassing some women supporters of the party.
