Respect coalition dharma, DMK tells allies

Chennai, Feb 15 (UNI) The Administrative Committee of the ruling DMK today firmly told its allies to respect coalition dharma and adopt a constructive approach to resolve intra-front issues.

A resolution to this effect, adopted at the Committee meeting, chaired by DMK President and Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, warned that if the allies failed to respect coalition dharma, it would only pave way for the ''communal forces'' to once again raise its ugly heads in the country.

In an apparent reference to alliance parties like the Congress, Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) and the Left parties stepping up their offensive against the Government, the DMK, heading the Democratic Progressive Alliance (DPA), told the allies not to embarass the Government by raising issues in public.

The resolution said the DMK strongly believed that only if all the parties in the front strove to strengthen the alliance and coalition, ''we can meet the challenges being faced by the nation with the support of secular and progressive forces.'' The alliance parties should not give any impression that they were supporting, knowingly or unknowingly the ''communal forces'', which were defeated in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections. ''They should reciprocate the coalition dharma and constructive approach of the DMK in resolving issues,'' it said.

It said the DMK, a key constituent of the Congress-led UPA Government at the Centre, was extending full support to the Manmohan Singh Government and never embarassed it by raising issues in public.
