Railways plan to set up Logistic Parks in Punjab and Haryana

Chandigarh, Feb 15 (UNI) The Railways have planned to set up Logistic Parks in Punjab and Haryana to handle increased volume of freight traffic.

One such park will be set up at Ladowal, near Ludhiana, in Punjab, Northern Railway General Manager Sriparkash said at a press conference here today, adding that container traffic had gone up with increased economic activity in these states.

Mr Sriparkash, who was here to discuss local issues of Ambala and Ferozepur divisions with MPs from Punjab and Haryana, hailed the performance of the Northern Railway this year.

He said the total earnings of the Northern Railway had been 11 per cent higher during the ten months of the current financial year over the earnings last year. Similarly there has been an increase of 12 per cent in the passenger traffic this year, he added.

He said the railways have decided to spend about Rs 75 to Rs 80 crore on providing amenities to passengers this year, which was double than the money spent last year.

"We are determined to provide more facilities to passengers" and number of steps have been taken to this effect in Ambala and Ferozepur divisions , he added.

Referring to level crossing accidents, Mr Sriparkash said there were a number of level crossings which were at present unmanned in Ambala and Ferozepur divisions. Some of these level crossings have already been manned and the remaining were being manned.

Summons to six people for tampering documents in Uphaar case

New Delhi, Feb 15 (UNI) A local court today issued summons to six people including the Ansal brothers in connection with alleged tampering with or disappearance of vital documents from the case files of Uphaar cinema tragedy in which 69 people lost their lives. Delhi police had filed a final chargesheet against Dinesh Chand Sharma, a staff member in Patiala House Court allegedly involved in tampering with documents from the case files of Uphaar cinema......

CM urges C-Ward residents to exercise caution

Mumbai, Feb 15 (UNI) Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh has urged residents of C-Ward here to exercise caution before consenting to proposals by private organisations for redeveloping the area. The residents must exercise such a caution till the time a Planning Authority has been established to oversee the implementation of the redevelopment project, Mr Deshmukh told a delegation led by South Mumbai Lok Sabha member Milind Deora which called upon him today. CPI protests petrol, diesel prices hike

Kolhapur, Feb 15 (UNI) Communist Party of India (CPI), Kolhapur unit, workers today staged demonstrations at the city's busy Shivaji square to protest against the hike in petrol and diesel prices. The demonstrations here were part of the agitation launched across the country by the left parties against the hike.
