President alerts people against divisive ideology

Bodh Gaya, Feb 15 (UNI) President Pratibha Devisingh Patil today alerted people, particularly the student community, against the growing trend of 'divisive ideology' and 'narrow identities' to maintain the country's 'unity in diversity'.

Inaugurating the first Bihar state inter university cultural festival--''Tarang-2008''-- here, Ms Patil referring to the rich cultural heritage of the country said it was the prime responsibility of the country's young generation to uphold the 'rich values' in every sphere of the life.

Since India's 61.8 per cent of the population is under the age of 29 years, this young generation must understand the importance of not only maintaining the unity and integrity of the country but also its rich heritage, she opined.

Underscoring the role of universities and their teaching staff to help create the proper mindset of the students, the President said, '' We always look forward to their rich contribution, which will further raise India's standing in the world. '' Referring to the huge progress in science and technology the country had made and the important role being played by the universities and other institutions, she said they must try to improve the image of their country further on world fora.
