Political parties in AP protest petrol price hike

Hyderabad, Feb 15 (UNI) Various political parties today organised rallies and took out processions in Andhra Pradesh to protest the hike in petrol and diesel prices by the Centre.

The United National Progressive Alliance would agitate along with the Left parties in different states, demanding withdrawal of the hike, its convener and Telugu Desam Party president N Chandrababu Naidu told reporters outside the state Assembly here.

''We will finalise joint struggles in different states in protest against the hike, seventh time since the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) came to power at the Centre,'' Mr Naidu said.

The hike would badly hit the common man, already suffering from over 300 per cent increase in the prices of essential commdities, he said, asserting, ''We will not rest till the UPA government rolled back the hike.'' A report from Tirupati said members of the opposition parties, holding placards and banners took out rallies. They conducted awareness camp on alternative petro products at various places in the temple town.

Leaders and activists of the TDP raised 'anti-government' slogans during the rally that traversed through the main streets of the town.

About 100 CPM cadres led by leader K Murali, took out a procession from the party office to Leela Mahal, where they blocked the road for more than half an hour. They burnt an effigy representing Central government as a mark of protest against the petrol price hike.

C B Bhave is new SEBI chairman

New Delhi, Feb 15: The Government has appointed C B Bhave as the new Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). The appointment of Bhave, who replaces M. Damodaran, would be for a period of three years from the date he assumes office. Bhave is presently the Chairman and Managing Director of the National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL). ANI.....

President visits Mahabodhi temple, inaugurates cultural festival at Magadh University

Gaya (Bihar), Feb 15 : President Pratibha Patil, who is on a two-day official visit to Bihar, today visited the Mahabodhi temple at Bodh Gaya and innaugrated the first Inter University Cultural Festival hosted by the Magadh University. The Mahabodhi temple is a shrine in Bodh Gaya where the Buddha attained enlightenment. Patil who is on her first official visit to Bihar since assuming office in July 2007, said after visiting the temple that the teachings of Lord Buddha should be.....

MP most conducive for investment: Birla

Jabalpur, Feb 15 (UNI) Aditya Birla Group Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla today said that Madhya Pradesh is India's most conducive destination for industrial investment. ''I have a 50 year-old association with this state. My family set up Grasim at Nagda in 1950. It is the world's largest fibre-based unit. In that sense, Madhya Pradesh is like my home state,'' he said here while addressing, as chief guest, the inaugural session of the Investors' Meet 2008......
