Police admits its 7 men involved in kidney scam; arrest ASI

New Delhi, Feb 15 (UNI) The Delhi Police today accepted the involvement of its men in the kidney racket with the arrest of an Assistant Sub-Inspector and declaring six others as absconders.

Charging ASI Ravinder Kumar Singh, of the Special Staff, under Section 342, 384, 389 and 120-B of the IPC for extortion, Crime Branch sleuths arrested him yesterday after investigations revealed the involvement of seven of its men in the scam, said the police today.

''Raids were made at the places of all the seven accused, but only R K Singh was arrested,'' said a senior police official.

The accused had picked Amit's associate Upendra from Gurgaon on January 7 and took Rs 19.85 lakh from him before releasing him, he said.

''All the seven have been suspended.'' The Delhi Police has interrogated both the accused -- Upendra and Dr Amit Kumar -- in connection with the case and recorded their statements, he added.

Investigations had revealed that Singh and six others of the Special Staff had extorted ''vast sums'' of money from kidney scam kingpin Dr Amit Kumar and his associate Dr Upendra early this year last month.

The other six policemen involved in the scam were Head Constables Devender Singh and Vijay Bahadur and Constables Naresh Kumar, Kaleem Baig, Surender Rathi and Rakesh Kumar.

Today's revelation came after recently the Gurgaon Police had alleged that the Delhi Police knew about the kidney scam and had even arrested Dr Amit Kumar and Upendra but later let him go in return of pecuniary benefits.
