Minister urges to UDF to withdraw hartal on Feb 19

Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 15 (UNI) Kerala Food and Civil Supplies Minister C Divakaran today urged the United Democratic Front (UDF) to withdraw its proposed hartal on February 19, against the price hike of essential commodities.

A release said here the minister, while admitting the price hike, said the problem confronts not only Kerala, but the entire country. However, when compared to other states, the price in the state was low, he added.

Mr Divakaran said the government was planning to introduce an Essential Commodities Act(ECA) in the state.

He said the government would pressurise the Centre to curb the price hike of essential commodities.

The government would also take measures to control hoardings, the release added.

SC issues notices to Centre, Uttarakhand on road through sanctuary

Govt approves bidders for second stage Port construction

Bangalore, Feb 15 (UNI) Karnataka Governor Rameshwar Thakur today said the state government had short-listed six bidders for constructing the second stage of Karwar Port. Talking to newspersons here, he said the Port would be built on public-private partnerships at an estimated cost of Rs 500 crore. The Port, which presently handles three MT of Cargo, would handle five MT of Cargo, once the second stage was completed, he added. The Governor said two more.....

Blaze destroys 50 huts in Mumbai

Mumbai, Feb 15 (UNI) At least 50 huts were gutted in a blaze that broke out due to bursting of firecrakers during a marriage celebration in a jhuggi at Mahim in Central Mumbai today. However, there were no casualties, fire department officials said. According to eyewitnesses, the blaze started at around 2030 hrs after a spark from a firecraker, burst during a marriage celebration, fell on the jhuggi, situated behind the Police Lines in Mahim, destroying.....
