According to police, Gunakaran and Amudha, along with their children, staged the dharna to protest the reported failure of the Consulate to hand over documents pertaining to their nationality.

They had applied for French nationality in 1996 since their relatives were residing in France.

Gunakaran told newspersons that eventhough the papers had reached the Consulate in 2004, they were not handed over to him and to protest the ''injustice'', he and his family members resorted to the dharna.

As security was tightened in the area in view of the visit of the French Ambassador, police removed them from the place.
