Cong won't demand rollback in oil prices

New Delhi, Feb 15 (UNI) The Congress today categorically stated that it would not demand a rollback in oil prices effected from midnight last night.

''If there is a consensus that the oil prices should be rolled back to help the commonman, we will support it or if the international crude prices come down.'' Congress spokesman Shakeel Ahmed told reporters.

He said the Congress was never in favour of taxing the commonman, but the Government had to hike the petroleum prices in view of the fluctuating crude prices in the international market.

''The ground reality faced by the Government compelled them to go for a hike... but we never wanted and still don't want that the commonman is taxed,'' he said.

The Government had increased the petrol prices by Rs two a litre and diesel prices by Re one a litre from midnight lastnight.
