Anju Bobby George bags silver at Doha

Doha, February 15: Ace Indian long jumper Anju Bobby George's season got off to a fine start as she clinched a silver medal at the Asian Indoors Athletics Championship on Thursday.

Anju's silver was India's first medal on the opening day of the championships before MA Prajusha added another by winning the bronze medal - her maiden international medal - in the same event with a jump of 6.09m. Anju started with a modest distance of 6.01m but after few more checks on the runway she jumped to 6.33m in the second attempt. Adding 3cm in the third attempt, Anju's fifth jump was 6.38m but the Indian lost her lead to Chinese Chen Yaling in the final attempt, which came to 6.37m

Anju had to be content with the second place with 6.38m while Yaling won the contest with 6.39m.

Long Jump: Anju fails to break her previous record

The Tamilnadu-based and Kerala-born athlete Anju, who already qualified for the Beijing Olympics, leapt to a distance of 6.50 m to win the gold. Her previous meet record was 6.53 m.
