Teachers can't campaign for polls: Govt

Shillong, Feb 7 (UNI) The Meghalaya government has barred teachers of government-aided schools from participating in Assembly election campaign trails of any party or candidate.

In a notice issued here today, the Education Department directed all the government-aided school teachers to stay away from poll campaigns, stating that the act of commission on their part is violative of the rule of conduct of government and government-aided employees.

A single-phase election of the 60-seat Assembly will be held on March 3 and counting on March 7.

The filing of nomination will begin on February 8 and close on February 15. The last date for withdrawal is February 18.

The notification said teachers of institutions enjoying grants-in-aid from the government should refrain from taking part in poll campaigns because they were given salaries like government servants.

It also stated that those found guilty would be dealt with strictly.

Interestingly, some politicians who have been given tickets by various parties, both regional and national, to contest the election were teachers of the government-aided institutions and many are members of some parties.
