Maoists parallel govt against peace accord

Kathmandu, Feb 7: The Nepali Congress (NC) and the CPN-UML have reacted sharply to the Maoists' decision to revive their parallel government, saying the move was against the spirit of the comprehensive peace accord(CPA).

NC leader Prakash Sharan Mahat and UML leader Rajendra Pandey, who are members of the SPA task force formed to suggest a way to reactivate the local bodies, said the Maoists' decision was ''against the comprehensive peace accord.'' ''I have not gone through the text of the decision. But, if that is true, it is against the peace process and spirit of the constituent assembly election,'' The Himalayan Times quoted Mr Pandey as saying.

He said the Maoists had also agreed not to revive the local bodies till the CA polls.

''The Maoist decision was against the peace accord the Maoists had signed which clearly stated that the parallel government the Maoists were running would be dissolved,'' Mr Pandey said.

Chief of the UN Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) Ian Martin said the revival of the URPC by the CPN-Maoist would be a breach of the CPA.

''I am yet to go through the decision of the Maoists to revive the Council,'' Mr Martin told mediapersons. ''I will talk to the Maoist leaders soon and seek a clarification on it,'' he added.

There were reports in the local media that the Maoists had decided to revive the parallel government in the villages.
