New Delhi, Feb 7 (UNI) The Lok Sabha has started a one-year Internship course to provide an opportunity to the outstanding young students to acquaint themselves with the works in Parliamentary democracy and democratic institutions besides the Indian Parliamentary system.
According to a Lok Sabha Secretariat release issued here today, the programme-- commencing this month--has been launched on the initiative of Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee.
In the very first year, the Bureau of Parliamentary Studies and Training of the Lok Sabha Secretariat has selected five students for the course.
The programme would enable the interns to understand and appreciate the works in Parliament and Parliamentary democracy and to expose them to various aspects of practices and procedures of Parliament. In the process, it would help the interns gain a sound understanding about the pre-eminent position of Parliament in the democratic set-up as a multifunctional institution.
The course would also expose the students to the constitutional and legal position with respect to the working of the three organs of state -- the Legislature, the Executive and the Judiciary. The interns would get a better understanding about how Parliament as an institutional mechanism is involved in the process of enhancing and deepening democratic ideas and values, nationally and globally.
The five students selected for the first Internship course are -- Ms Saher Mahmood from St Stephen's College, University of Delhi, Mr Nitin Raj Singh of the Institute of Management Studies from Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut (UP), Ms Arundhwati Das from Guwahati University (Assam), Ms Deepali Mathur of Indore School of Social work from Devi Ahilya Vishvavidyala (DAVV) Madhya Pradesh and Mr Rahat Hasan from Aligarh Muslim University, Uttar Pradesh -- the release added.
