Lakhs of devotees take dip in sacred rivers on 'Mauni Amavasya'

Lucknow, Feb 7 (UNI) People took a holy dip in sacred rivers and offered prayers in several temples across Uttar Pradesh on the occasion of 'Mauni Amavasaya' today.

In Allahabad, devotees converged on the ongoing 'Magha mela' for ritual ablution at Sangam, which is a confluence of holy rivers Ganga, Yammuna and Saraswati.

Similarly, in Kanpur, Varanasi and Mathura, lakhs of people thronged the banks of river Ganga and Yammuna to take holy dip on the auspicious day.

Giving 'Daan'(charity) to poor holds great significance on 'mauni Amavasaya'.

In Sitapur, people took a ritual bath in 'Chakratirth' on the premises of significant temple 'Namisharan' and later offered obeisance to the Goddess Lalita devi.

In the wake of terrorist attacks, unprecedented security arrangements have been made on the ritual ghats.

So far, no untoward incident has been reported.
