Jumbo trampled to death a woodpicker

Siliguri, Feb 7 (UNI) A 58-year-old woodpicker was today trampled to death by a hard of elephants in the reserved forest of Baikantapur, at the outskirt of this commercial town, forest official said.

An attempt to recover his body failed as the Jumbos in the forest refused to let the forest guards to go enar the body this evening, Baikantapur's Forest Divisional Officer A K Samanta said.

He said Murari Chandra Pal, a resident of Telipara, had gone to collect woods in the morning. When he did not return, a search by the forest guards and family members found the mutilated body, which was surrounded by the pachyderms.

Mr Samanta said they would make another attempt tomorrow to recover the body.

Amend IPC to curb crimes against women: NWC

Mysore, Feb 7 (UNI) The National Women Commission (NWC) has sought amendment to the Indian Penal Code (IPC) to make it more gender sensitive and provid for stringent punishment for crimes against women, NWC member Nirmala Venkatesh said today. Speaking to newspersons here, she said the recommendation would be submitted to the Centre shortly. Ms Venkatesh said an amendment was necessary in the wake of growing crimes against the dignity of women.....

CM directs police to beef up security

Panaji, Feb 7 (UNI) Chief Minister Digamber Kamat has directed police officials to tighten security at crowded places, especially beaches, of the state as a precautionary measure, as two suspected terrorists from Hyderabad and Karnataka went unnoticed despite their stay in the city guesthouse. Riyazuddin Nasir from Hyderabad and Asadullah Basha from Hospet, who are suspected to have masterminded a plan to blow-up crowded beaches in the northern parts of Goa on the night.....
