Iran Embassy Councellor calls on Prince of Arcot

Chennai, Feb 7 (UNI) The Cultural Counsellor in the Iranian Embassy Karim Najafi called on the Prince of Arcot Nawab Mohammed Ali at the latter's official residence Amir Mahal here today.

During the discussions, Dr Najafi expressed his desire to the Prince to establish an Indo-Iran friendship society in Tamil Nadu to promote socio-cultural activities, a press release from the Prince said here.

The society could also preserve old historic documents, relating to old cultures and tradition of two great countries, which were available in Persian, Arabic and Urdu languages, it said.

Ganguly, Bakre share lead

Chennai, Feb 7 (UNI) Defending champion Surya Shekhar Ganguly of Petroleum Sports Promotion Board (PSPB) joined the overnight leader Tejas Bakre of Indian Airlines at the top with four points at the end of the fifth round of Velammal National 'A' Chess Championship, here today. Elephanta festival to commence from Feb 15

Mumbai, Feb 7 (UNI) The Elephanta Festival at Elephanta caves, off the Mumbai harbour, will commence from February 15. The two-day-long event is being organised by Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) in association with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). The highlight of the festival is the performance of tabla maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain after a gap of ten years. Taxi Union threatens indefinite strike

Mumbai, Feb 7 (UNI) A section of the city taxi union has threatened to go on indefinite strike if the violence against drivers did not stop. ''The violence against our people continues unabated, and they are still being targetted by the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers,'' Mumbai Airport Taxi Union president Kanhaiya Singh claimed. ''If the situation remains the same and the government does not act, we will have no option but to go on indefinite.....
